CHARLES
JAMES: Chicago History Museum
View
the creations of America’s first couturier. Starting as a
designer of hats in a small Chicago shop in 1925, James became one
of the most respected fashion designers with shows in Paris and
New York. James is known for the lush structural beauty of his clothes,
with sculpted ball gowns made in lavish fabrics. He dressed many
of America’s best dressed women of his generation. Balenciaga
said of his colleague “Charles James raised dressmaking from
an applied art to a pure art form”.
