Style & Design in Chicago

Beauty and style are all around us. The way we live and dress enhances our pleasure and that which we give to others. Today explore two SPECIAL museum exhibits: one that shares the pure joy of lovely apparel – the other that deals with how we live in our world.

CHARLES JAMES: Chicago History Museum
View the creations of America’s first couturier. Starting as a designer of hats in a small Chicago shop in 1925, James became one of the most respected fashion designers with shows in Paris and New York. James is known for the lush structural beauty of his clothes, with sculpted ball gowns made in lavish fabrics. He dressed many of America’s best dressed women of his generation. Balenciaga said of his colleague “Charles James raised dressmaking from an applied art to a pure art form”.

DESIGN FOR A LIVING WORLD: Field Museum of Natural History
Discover the link between conservation and design by examining the work of 10 prominent designers. Using sustainable materials harvested from around the world, designers such as Maya Lin and Isaac Mizrahi use natural materials that support rather than deplete endangered places, and create chic new objects for our everyday lives. Explore their design processes through drawing plans, photographs, and video interviews while you marvel at the finished products.
